Aloha 2012, Aloha Sunday

Tuesday, January 10th, 2012

We’ve been so crazed wrapping up 2011 that we’ve let the Fiftytwo blog fall to the wayside a bit. Now that 2012 has arrived, we resolve to update our comings and goings on a regular basis, hooray!

Now, a much-deserved closer look at one of our favorite new shops, Aloha Sunday – a surf inspired store in San Diego’s North Park neighborhood. In October, Katie and Jessica popped by the store to chat with the guys and experience the one-of-a-kind interior and carefully curated selection.

The idea is to offer brands that aren’t available at your typical surf shop at affordable prices for the surfer and non-surfer alike. Alongside impeccable vintage finds and grooming products, Aloha Sunday stocks Men’s and Women’s items from Olasul, Marzia Genesi Sea, Industry of all Nations, Josh Oldenburg surfboards and Penny Skateboards just to name a few.

The interior-a thoughtful hybrid of vintage industrial and rustic minimalism- is as much a draw as the merchandise. Using salvaged materials and reclaimed wood to construct the walls and shelves, the guys created a homey atmosphere for shopping or just relaxing on the stage with a coffee and meeting people from the local beach community. It reminds us of the way folks used to shop. And for those that cannot make it to sunny San Diego, you can check out their e-commerce site here. As they say on the West coast, rad.

Store of the Week: Totokaelo

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

Totokaelo (TOH-toh-KYE-oh) began in 2003 as a small shop in the Fremont area of Seattle but has quickly expanded to include two shops and an expansive online community. Their online store was created with the intention that it would be more than just a place to shop. By allowing ample space for comments and personal profiles, it also acts as a forum for like-minded fashion enthusiasts. Users have come to trust one another’s opinions on everything from fashion to music to vacation advice, which may seem odd, but if you think about it makes complete sense. If you know that someone has the same taste in wardrobe as you, it is probable that you can trust their taste in other areas, whether that be a new band or a boutique hotel and whether they live in the same city as you or halfway across the world. The lines they carry include Chloe, A.P.C.,  Rick Owens, Costume National and Fiftytwo’s own E.M. Noir among many others.
