Bow tied Babes

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

You steal your boyfriend’s over-sized sweatshirt, his razor, and maybe even his credit card(!)  Now you can steal his bow ties, too.  Although the menswear trend always seems to be in fashion, the bow tie is popping up on the necks of well-dressed women as the apparent go-to item for Spring 2011. Remember a few weeks ago when we told you about C. Chauchat ties? The line, founded in fact by two women, has some great bow ties that you (or your man) can accessorize with.  Take a look and see how other ladies are making a statement with this masculine neck wear.

Refinery29 calls bow ties a “fun, springtime accessory.”

Blogger Man Repeller adds some personal style to her necklace with a few bow ties.

The trend even continues for Fall 2011, as seen on the runways and captured by InStyle

Art in the Age

Thursday, March 24th, 2011

Ahh Philadelphia: the City of Brotherly Love, epicenter of American history, bitter rival of New York sports teams; the motherland of the Philly Cheese Steak and the Liberty Bell; the place where one finds himself in pursuit of life, liberty, and now, fashion.

The Fiftytwo Team is a traveling bunch, and last week Jessica packed up some trunks and headed from our city to another, where she found an unlikely store with a memorable name: Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction. Lacking the usual traits of your standard boutique, Art in the Age is a retail-gallery combo in Philly that supports hand-made artisanal culture by “empowering artists producing high quality work marked by fine craft and intellectual rigor.”

Jess managed to snap some photos of the eclectic space with all of its charming nick-knacks and original, handmade wallpaper designs. Highlights included March’s exhibition of Industrial Arts Modern Motorcycles and Art in the Age’s own spirits: Root and Snap, which you can read more about on Design*Sponge.  Clothes, art, and drinks? Us New Yorkers are definitely feeling the brotherly love!

Marina Callis

Friday, March 18th, 2011

We all know that beautiful fabrics and textiles are the foundations of a quality garment, but we rarely think of this medium as the groundwork for jewelry.  Enter Marina Callis, and her collection of artfully assembled textile accessories.  Callis uses various fabrics and ribbons to create headbands, necklaces, bracelets, rings, pins and other pieces that remind us of intricate origami sculptures. According to Callis, who launched her line in 2000, “the objective of each creation is to transgress the limit between accessory and cloth.”  There is such transgression, in fact, that some of her pieces have ended up in museums, such as the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago.

      Thursday, March 10th, 2011

Listen up, all you well-dressed gentlemen: a new line of menswear staples has arrived at Fiftytwo, and as you know, the right neckwear can literally tie together your outfit. C. Chauchat (pronounced ‘show-shaw’), features neckties, bow ties, and scarves that are hand made, tailored and customizable.  These lavish wardrobe fundamentals are the result of the collaboration between Curie Choi and Beverly Liang, who incorporate high-end details and a light feminine touch while utilizing unexpected fabrics such as graphic cotton voiles, neon silk chiffon, and tulle.

A Welcome to the Weiland Woman

      Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

Reunited and it feels so gooood! Joining its well-received other half, the Timo Weiland Fall 2011 women’s collection is now represented by Fiftytwo. The collection was inspired by colonial India, in which design partners Timo Weiland and Alan Eckstein envisioned a fictional trip that Gloria Vanderbilt and Keith Richards embarked upon, circa 1960.  Geometric prints, sixties silhouettes, and bold colors definitely reflect the rocker-socialite vibe, á la Bombay.

In an interview with heartymagazine.com, the TW guys described the Timo Weiland woman as “a confident, well-traveled girl.  She may or may not be model-pretty, it is all about the way she carries herself.  The clothes she curates into everyday are fun, young, and exciting. She is always interesting and engaging in social situations…Our girl definitely loves colorful prints, unexpected silhouettes and dramatic layering options.”
