New “It” Item: The Scarf

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

Versatile. A word used to advertise much of what is being sold to us these days. Phones now function as cameras, calendars, mini televisions, mp3 players and a million other things once you get “apps” involved. A single book is no longer enough: we have devices that store our books, magazines and newspapers all in one, some of them even letting us surf the web between page-flips. The New York Times remarks on how one particular multi-functional item has grown to be an overwhelming trend: the scarf.

Scarves, arguably the most basic piece of clothing that exists (they are, after all, squares of fabric), are also easily the clothing item that you can be the most creative with. This is possibly what has made them such a hot commodity, as along with our new found love of versatility, we are growing more and more appreciative of  personal style and originality.

Ruth La Ferla, writing for the NY Times, notes that this new obsession with scarves has led to an array of “how to” tutorials online, displaying various ways of tying, wrapping, twisting and knotting your scarf. For instance, just last week Refinery29, offered its readers a slide-show titled “How to Tie your Summer Scarves.”

We too have been obsessed with the scarf ever since we were  introduced to the amazing patterns, fabrics and embellishments that make up MOIO‘s scarves . The good news is, with all these new tying techniques and the added bonus that most of MOIO’s scarves are reversible, we can get away with wearing them all the time – one day it’s a head-scarf, the next it’s a dress!

Singing in the Rain

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

Just when we were ready to shed our jackets and head for the beach, the sun decided to go on its own little holiday, leaving us with rain, rain and (surprise!) more rain for the next week. It might be a while until you can wear that new sundress, but there is also no need to dress in a way that has you resembling a plastic bag with legs. If Gene Kelly can have fun in the rain, so can we.

Here are some items that will have you itching to leave the house and show them off, even if its thundering.

Nothing makes rainboots quite as exciting as a pair of soft socks that peek out the top. With & Wessel’s knee socks are made from 100% wool and will dry faster than your average cotton sock, making them perfect for playing in puddles.

A few people have been blessed with hair that stays put in a rainstorm, but most of us have to find creative ways to tackle our hair when the elements get involved. This is where the headscarf comes in. Timelessly Elegant, and oh-so-mysterious when paired with sunglasses. MOIO’s bright colors and prints will cheer you up even on the dreariest of days.

After getting all dolled up there is nothing worse than having to cover your outfit with a raincoat. But carry a Khirma Eliazov bag and no one will notice your outerwear. The shining gunmetal color of this Demling Oversized Clutch  reminds us of city sidewalks in the rain, very glamorous sidewalks of course.

While everyone else is decked out in monochromatic trench-coats, why not pick this time to stand out in a gorgeous Alessa dress. Who needs sunshine when you can wear a dress like this?

After a long day its time to don your coziest With&Wessel Sweatpants and curl in bed with a movie. Singing in the Rain perhaps?

Chilly necks, fear not: the scarf trend continues on, and Moio is prepared. Created by French designers, friends, and fashionistas Monia and Ioana, Moio is a unique collection of scarves that combines modern prints with high-end embellishments.  The bright colors, fringe details, studding, and eyelets are girly-girl cute with a rock’n’roll edge.  The best thing about Moio scarves? Their versatility.  Most styles are reversible, so they can be worn and styled for many different looks.  Voila! One scarf has become three.

Once merely a winter necessity, scarves have become a fashion staple and wardrobe essential. This easy-to-wear accessory is great for layering, and can change the look of almost any outfit. Not sure how to wear your Moio scarf? Here are some style ideas to get you started:
