Marina Callis

Friday, March 18th, 2011

We all know that beautiful fabrics and textiles are the foundations of a quality garment, but we rarely think of this medium as the groundwork for jewelry.  Enter Marina Callis, and her collection of artfully assembled textile accessories.  Callis uses various fabrics and ribbons to create headbands, necklaces, bracelets, rings, pins and other pieces that remind us of intricate origami sculptures. According to Callis, who launched her line in 2000, “the objective of each creation is to transgress the limit between accessory and cloth.”  There is such transgression, in fact, that some of her pieces have ended up in museums, such as the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago.
