With & Wessel

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

As we enjoy the agreeably sunny 77-degree weather here in the City, the last thing we are thinking about is throwing on a wool sweater.  But did you know that wool absorbs 30% of its weight in moisture, helping to regulate temperature more efficiently than cotton? Yeah, we didn’t know that either.

This interesting little factoid comes on the heels of a new line of 100% wool garments at Fiftytwo: With & Wessel.  This is not your great grandmother’s itchy wool cardigan (you know, the one you keep in storage as a last resort to an unpaid heating bill). This is something new, innovative, and completely unexpected. With & Wessel (pronounced pronounced “Vitt” and “Vessel”), founded by husband-and-wife duo Cathrine Wessel and Stian Tolnaes, was inspired by the Norwegian tradition of wearing layers of thin wool basics. With & Wessel clothing contradicts the “itchy, scratchy, heavy” associations that we have with wool.  Instead, they are unbelievably soft, sheer and comfortable: available in different weights ranging from semi-sheer to a French Terry. The line includes intimates (who knew we’d be wanting to wear wool panties!), tops, bottoms, cardigans, and socks for both men and women.

Another fun fact we learned about wool: it is partly composed of protein, making it odor-absorbent and anti-bacterial.  It is also one of the most eco-friendly fibers, being that it is natural, renewable, and biodegradable. Just another reason to love new and inventive fashion.
